The Pros and Cons of Online Dating 05/28/2011
Online dating has become more popular over the last few years. To some people, the concept of online dating may still seem taboo. There are others who have tried it and feel quite comfortable with this type of dating venue. As with most anything, there are pros and cons to online dating. The Pros Online dating offers a world of opportunity. You can join one or many online dating websites at the same time. For those who have a very busy lifestyle, online dating can be a good way to save time in meeting people you otherwise might not meet in your daily life. Online dating websites offer you a wide variety in the people you can meet. You not only can find people in your local area, but people around the world. You can meet people with the same interests as your own. You can focus more specifically on the type of people you want to meet. You decide who you want to correspond with before meeting them face-to-face. If anyone harasses you or you have a reason not to correspond with someone, most online dating websites have a block feature. Rejection on an online dating website doesn't affect you as much as it would if you met the person face-to face. You can just say 'next' and move on with meeting other people. Online dating can be safe if you use safety measures. You do not have to give out your real name or any other identifying information. You get to know the person over a period of time until trust and a comfort level is formed. The Cons Unfortunately, there are some people who use online dating websites to deceive. There are people who intentionally set out to lie, such as someone who is married, but claims they are single. You could be pulled in by a person's charm and great personality only to find out they just want to have an extramarital affair. Some people sign up for online dating websites to scam others out of money. You never know who is behind a computer screen. People can claim to be anyone they want. They can lie about their age, their gender or anything to draw you in. Online dating sites can be costly. This depends on the specific site. Some online dating websites are free while others charge a fee. Some people get so involved in online dating that they forget there is a real world out there. There are those who actually get addicted to online dating and the factor of not being intimidated with face-to-face dating. This can cause a person to get into a rut of using the internet for their entire social life. Online dating can work out for those who use safety measures and take their time in getting to know someone. Go slowly. Don't give out any identifying information. If you build trust and a comfort level over time with someone you've met on an online dating website, meet only in a public place. Never meet someone at your home. Heed any warning signs and don't let your emotions control better judgment. CommentsLeave a Reply |
